Los historiadores David Giovannoni y Patrick Feaster descubrieron una versión de “Au Clair de la Lune”, de Pierrot Répondit, grabada con la ayuda de un aparato llamado fonoautógrafo, son sólo diez segundos durante los que una voz femenina canta una canción popular francesa pero esta grabación, datada en 1860, es la más antigua del mundo.

El fonoautógrafo fue inventado por el francés Edouard-Leon Scott de Martinville, quien logró crear imágenes visuales del sonido usando una aguja que se movía con las ondas sonoras y las marcaba en un papel cubierto de hollín.

Scott de Martinville nunca logró reproducir la música que grabó, pero décadas antes de que los derechos de autor se convirtieran en un tema de actualidad, tuvo la perspicacia de patentar sus grabaciones.

David Giovannoni y su colega Patrick Feaster encontraron en 2007 varias grabaciones de Scott de Martinville en la oficina de patentes francesa, las escanearon y se las llevaron a EEUU.
